Season’s Greetings

The Christmas season is, in my humble opinion, the best time of the year.

It is the only season where it is acceptable to drink our weight in hot chocolate before running it off in the new year. It is a ‘vicious cycle’, but a delicious one in fairness.

One thing I love about this season is the act of gift giving. I am admittedly a bad gift giver. I fear that whatever I buy or give will not be good enough. I’ve realised however in recent years, that the heart behind the gift, is often appreciated as much and if not more than the gift itself.

We have all, I’m sure, received a gift from a loved one, who provided a gift that aligned with our wants and needs. One of the best gifts I've received was a paid ticket to Paris. A one-day gallivant in the City of Love, became a very fond memory. The thing that stuck with me, was the conversations I had been having prior, with my wife, about my desire to travel and see the world. The gift she had paid for, communicated to me that she cared about the desires of my heart and what I aspired to do in my life too. That gift showed me she loved and cared for me deeply.

Moments like that, allow me to consider God’s love for us and the gift that his love is. John 3:16 says: ‘God so loved the world, he gave his only son, so that whosoever believes in him, shall not perish but have eternal life.’

Sometimes, we forget that the Christmas season is not about amazing material gifts, it is, for me, an opportunity to acknowledge God as the great gift giver, the giver of life & salvation. It is a wonderful revelation to know that Jesus Christ is the gift from God that keeps on giving. His birth gives us hope (John 1:21), his presence brings us joy (Psalm 16:11), his love brings comfort and peace (2 Cor 13:11), and his life is a guide and light for us all to live by (Psalm 119:105).

As Christians, in the media, and because of Jesus, we are now carriers of that light (Matthew 5:13-16). Our very presence in this industry as followers of Christ, will have been by God’s design, and as verse 16 says, we can be encouraged that our position in media has purpose: “You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept.”

Be encouraged that, your life has meaning, and your work has purpose. Your gift to the world, it is to be, a bearer of light, a beacon of hope and a presence of peace through the gift of grace and love, given to us by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

If that is all we can give, it will most definitely, be enough.

From all the Christians in Media team, we send our Christmas greetings to you and your loved ones. May this time be filled with the Shalom peace that comes from the greatest gift.
